Evaluation of Drills in Coached Session
The drills have been observed and assessed to identify the strengths and weakness of the team, so as to develop further training on specific aspects if required.
|
Purpose
The warm up is used to prepare the body to cope with the demands of the training session ahead, through light stretching and dynamic activity. The exercises included should be related to those in the game of netball (Shakespear, 1997). Netball demands rapid actions and it is therefore important to raise the blood temperature to stretch and warm up the muscles, tendons, ligaments and other tissues, reducing the the chance of injury (Crystal Hede, 2011). At the end of the warm-up, the athletes should now be ready to begin the workout ahead. Evaluation
The team was successful in stretching and warming their muscles in preparation for the drills ahead. They had full range of movement in their joints and muscles, allowing the player to have full involvement and performance in the sessions. |
|
Purpose
This drill is continuing on from the warm-up into a more sport-related exercise of small sided game play. This continues to increase the heart rate (Crystal Hede, 2011), working on the anaerobic and into the aerobic systems so as to maintain the fitness levels from the preparation period. The aim of this drill is to work on passing and movement. The players' passes must be accurate in order to maintain possession, and ball/court positioning is developed during this drill as players are constantly having to move around to break free due to the tight space. Evaluation In assessing this drill it is evident that the team needs to improve their passing. There needs to be a larger variety of passing (shoulder, bounce, chest) instead of relying upon the height of team members to lob the ball up above the defender. Although the footwork was very good in terms of stepping, there needs to be greater hustle when making a break. The attacking team needs to work on breaking free of the defender in their footwork and body movement. These components are essential and therefore the following sessions will need to be focused upon. |
|
Purpose
This drill works on the ATP and Lactic Acid system as it requires short-fast sprints at the target intensity of 100%. The footwork movements in this drill mimic those used in a game of netball. The first set of cones works on quick movements from forwards and backwards, when the team goes from attacking to defending. The second set of cones (side-steps) is replicated when a player is trying to break free from a defender. Finally the ladder increases the footwork of the player which is essential in all aspects of the game. Evaluation The individuals were very successful in maintaining a high intensity, reaching maximum heart rate of 203 beats per minute (220 minus the age). Overall the drill was completed successfully, however, Thomas and Bonnie need to improve their footwork during the cones. Their steps were too large, "lunging" to the cones in front instead of short steps. This would have increased the stress onto their joints and they may not reach the target heart rate, as the movement is slowed and the energy system (ATP) is not as heavily used as it ought to be. To improve this, related ladder, cone and footwork drills should be incorporated into following sessions. |

Purpose
This is a development of set game play for the team to use when in possession from the GK. It works on the movements that a player would need to make a break, receive the ball and to offer options. This drill works down the entire court including every player and a variety of movements and runs to replicate a game. The drill works from the GK to the GS, as it would in a game. Evaluation
This drill went really well with the timing of the runs and movements being perfected as the drill went on. All players were conscious of the rule of stepping, which had a clear improvement from earlier drills and/or sessions. Their communication was a strong point which contributed to the accuracy in the timing of movements by the receiving players. |
|
Purpose
The aim is to move the ball from the C to GS in the fastest amount of time, so as to have a larger opportunity to have a shot. It works on the attacking of each player as they make set moves to break free and/or move into space, while developing footwork, fitness and previous skills. This is essential as when put into place in a game, the team should now be able to move the ball efficiently and effectively into the attacking goal circle and have a shot. Evaluation
The timing was not as accurate as planned, however it was improved throughout the drill. In the extended video, it is very clear that this teams' weakness is in shooting. The set shooters of this team were not able to score two consecutive shots. This needs to be addressed immediately so as to have as much time as possible to develop their skills before the competition finals. This should have been previously developed in the specific general preparation phase and in earlier periods of the current phase. Psychological techniques (motivation, anxiety and visualisation) need to be employed in the continuing sessions so as to assist with the players performance. It was seen throughout the drill that individuals were getting over-aroused, causing anxiety which was shown in their performance by making quicker, rushed movements leading to failure. Visualisation will enhance not only the shooters', but all players performance in game play. Touching up on motivation will ensure that the team is mentally ready-enhancing their physical performance to reach their peak on the competition date. |

Purpose
The cool down is a transition of bringing the body back to its normal functions. During this period the athlete can perform certain activities that will facilitate a faster recovery and regeneration from the strains of training (Bompa T. O., Periodisation Training for Sports, 1999). Light dynamic movements assist the removal of built up lactic acid in their system reducing onset fatigue or soreness. Evaluation The cool down was successful in lowering the body temperature and heart rate back to the resting heart rate as per usual. The players also identified their fatigued muscles and stretched them accordingly. As this was successful, the team will have a fast recovery and regeneration before the next training session. |
